One way to really get in touch with vintage Chicago is through its history. The Chicago History Museum is home to multiple collections which take you back to the early years of the city. As an added bonus, there are displays covering the history of the United States, too.One of the most recent exhibits is the “I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot” display. Over the course of 150 years, the idea of wedding fashion has changed considerably; particularly in Chicago. “I Do” showcases a history of wedding fashion, leaving no member of the party uncovered. Come and see what a black wedding dress looks like or how a groom’s tux has changed over the past decade. You might even get inspired for your own vintage wedding. The exhibit will end on January 3, 2011.Moving away from fashion, the museum also contains the “My Chinatown” exhibit. One of Chicago’s oldest areas, the exhibit relates the oral histories of Chinatown. As such, visitors are given an insight into the area’s history, as well as Chinese-American culture.Yet “Facing Freedom” is the museum’s most popular exhibit. Extending past Chicago history, the display explores the concept of freedom and the moments in American history that have questioned/earned new liberties. If you can’t make it to Chicago, you can at least visit their online exhibit. The current Lincoln at 200 collection explores the political life of Abraham Lincoln. However, if you are able to stop by, tickets cost 14 for adults and 12 for students and seniors.
